The History of Bulwer

The village of Bulwer is reached 8km north of the station by the name on the Donnybrook-Underberg line.  The village was laid out in 1890 and named for Sir Henry Bulwer, governor of Natal from 1882 to 1885.  Today it is the principal town of the magisterial district of Polela.

A few kilometres north of Bulwer the R617 starts the descent into the valley of the Mkhomazi River.  The river makes several wide loops in the valley and the road ascends to the midland plateau through a seemingly endless series of curves and twists.
