Frankfort


The town of Frankfort was established in 1869 on the banks of the Wilge River. Frankfort is a typical Free State farming town, situated in a rich and fertile agricultural area. With it’s genial atmosphere, picturesque holiday resort and camp sites on the banks of the Wilge River, Frankfort is recognized as an ideal holiday destination. A haven for boating and fishing, the Wilge River and it’s facilities provide endless recreational opportunities for the whole family. The town was named after Frankfurt in Germany. Several skirmishes were fought in the region during the Anglo Boer War.

Dutch Reformed Church

In the centre of town, one of many buildings evident of the town’s cultural heritage. The church, which is a landmark in the ‘Riemland’ was designed by FH Ford. It was built nine years after the previous church was burnt down in 1901 during the Anglo Boer War. The cornerstone was laid by Pres Brand, can also be seen in the new church. The clock in the façade survived the fire of 1901.
