Simons Town


Simon's Town's long and proud naval tradition is evident wherever you go in this seaside port with its steep cobbled streets, Victorian buildings and distinct nautical atmosphere.  Founded in 1671, Simon's Town has been used for winter anchorage since 1741, in 1814 the port became headquarters of the Royal Navy.  Today the town is the principal base of the South African Navy.

* Inscriptions on tombstones in the old naval cemetery provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of early seafarers.

* The Martello tower in St George's Street, built in 1796 by the British as a defence against the French, is the best preserved of its kind in the world.

* A statue of the famous seafaring dog, Able Seaman Just Nuisance, stands on Jubilee Square.
