This town, which lies on the border of KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga, forms the northern gateway to the KZN Battlefields Route. Dorrie de Jager, sister of Dirk Uys, gave the town it’s name when the battle-weary Boer soldiers came to rest at Rooibult during the signing of the Peace Treaty which followed the First War of Independence. Majuba Mountain, the final point of conflict between Boer and Brit during this war, forms an imposing backdrop to the town.

Amajuba
(Mountain of the Doves)
Amajuba lies to the west of the Newcastle road and was declared a National Monument in 1941. The Battle of Majuba took place on 27 February 1881. General Colley led his troops up the mountain during the night, thinking that it was a good position to hold. Early the next morning the Boers climbed the mountain to attack and drive the British forces away. General Colley was killed during the ensuing battle. A number of grave sites and memorials can still be seen on the mountain. There is a museum and a picnic site. Open daily.
Anglo Boer War Centenary Commemorations
Between the 1st and the 12th of October 1899 Commandant-General Piet Joubert gathered an army of over 15 000, mainly mounted Burghers, outside Volksrust. On the 13th, 14th and 15th of October 1899 he marched them down into Natal, occupying the town of Newcastle. Their route took them past all the major battlefields of the First War of Independence, such as Majuba, Laing’s Nek and Schuinshoogte, that have become legends in South Africa history. Commandant-General Petrus Jacobus Joubert was born in 1831, a descendant of French Huguenots who had come to southern Africa in the late 17th century. He was elected Commandant-General of the Transvaal Republican forces at a mass meeting at Paardekraal in December 1880, although he claimed that he lacked the required talent for the task ahead. When Joubert was six years old his parents had joined the Great Trek and settled in Natal. Later he moved to the Transvaal, settling in the Wakkerstroom district, close to the future theatre of war. Joubert succeeded in educating himself and developed a strong interest in law, which enabled him to come to the force as a politician. In 1873 he became Chairman of the Volksraad (parliament) and was Vice President of the Republic until he resigned from the position. He returned to the political scene following the annexation of the Republic in 1877. He visited Britian in 1878 with President Paul Kruger as part of a deputation seeking to restore the former independence of the Transvaal but was unsuccessful. Joubert and Kruger did not always see eye to eye, but Joubert was always careful to keep on good terms with people whenever possible. A tall and powerful man, Joubert spoke English well, and was known as ‘Slim Piet’ by his followers, ‘slim’ being a Boer word describing guile and craftiness. He had a fiery spirit and was well respected for his generosity and, like Colley, his kindness. Commandant Nicolas Smit, second in command to Joubert, and ideally suitable for this job, was a man in his mid-forties. Although a farmer, like the majority of the Boers, he had an unrivalled natural talent for military matters. His effective use of cover was second to none, and Colley himself commented early in the war that Smit was”….an intelligent and fine man, courteous and humane in everything connected with the wounded, and gallant in action”.
