Vredenburg, means ‘town of peace’, began somewhat less peaceful than it’s name implies. A spring of fresh water located on the boundary line separting the farms, Heuningklip and Witteklip, had the respective owners quarrelling so much over water rights that the spring was first called Twisfontein (‘fountain of strive’) and later, as legal actions was taken, Prosesfontein (‘lawsuit fountain’). In 1875 the site was selected for the development of a town, a church was built there and the named changed to Vredenburg. A monument was erected in Church Street near the site of the contentious spring. Situated a mere 13 km inland from Saldanha, Vredenburg today serves as the business centre of the West Coast, offering big shops and many other facilities to the smaller towns in the region. The golf course on the outskirts of town is rated as one of the best in the district.
