A small village on the banks of the Wasbank River, close to the spot where the Voortrekkers, en route to the Battle of Blood River, took the vow on 9 December 1838. A plaque on the side of the road as you leave the village and approach the river, briefly tells the story.

Maria Ratschitz Mission
Built by Trappist monks at the end of the last century. The Order experienced a series of secular obstacles from the mid 1930’s. In recent years the mission stood abandoned, but is now being restored. Changes in South Africa since 1991 has led to a renewal of development at the mission, which is a remarkable cluster of 14 beautiful buildings in a dramatic setting at the base of the Hlatikulu mountain. The cathedral like church has magnificent decorated walls.
Tactile Carpets
Situated 40 km from Ladysmith on the N11. handwoven artistic designs are created on the farm Mielietuinshoek. Wonderful carpets are hand knotted by local Zulu women.
