“Set on route to the Kango Caves, in the picturesque Schoemanshoek Valley (14 kilometres from Oudtshoorn), Berluda is an intimate guesthouse experience, offering 6 en suite bedrooms (renovated in 2008) in the original Farmhouse, 6 self catering cottages build in 2007 & 2008), a restaurant (breakfast & dinners – reservations only), 2 swimming pools and wonderful lush gardens surrounded by ostriches and apricot orchards. Berluda is well known for its authentic South African farm hospitality and traditional South African cuisine, as well as professional ostrich farm tours on JP Schoeman’s working ostrich farm, Buffelsdrift. JP Schoeman was the winner of the Western Cape’s “Best Young Farmer of the year 2006” competition and his wife Laura gives a tour in English, Afrikaans, German, Dutch, (or a mixture of all languages!). This is an experience which is not to be missed.

Accommodation

Farmhouse

Berluda Farmhouse has been home to the Schoeman family for more than fifty years. It is a typical Klein Karoo Farmhouse, with characteristic South African antiques, wooden floors and rooms filled with love. Meals for guests are still prepared on the old wooden stove in the kitchen. A stay in the farmhouse is an experience in simple pleasures of an authentic Schoemanshoek farm.

Honeymoon suite with queen size bed and private patio overlooking swimming pool and lush garden. Spacious, light room with en suite bathroom including Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower. Named after the eldest Schoeman daughter, Matilda.

ROOM 2
Jannie and Rosie's Room

Luxury room with twin beds. Private patio overlooking garden and mountains. Spacious en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower and double basins. Named after the late Jannie Schoeman, and his wife Rosie, the matriarch of the family who started Berluda 10 years ago.

Lettie's Room

Beautiful Victorian room with twin beds and private patio overlooking garden. En suite bathroom includes Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower. Named after the youngest daughter, Lettie.

Fanie's Room

Spacious light room with antique interior and private patio overlooking garden. Twin beds and large en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower and double basins, accessible for wheelchairs. Named after the eldest son, Fanie.

Lovely, cosy room with twin beds and private patio overlooking garden. En suite bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower and double basins. Named after the grandmother, Ouma Lettie, that lived with the family at Berluda.

Cottages

COTTAGES :: Description

The old homestead that today houses the self-catering cottages, was the birthplace of 7th generation Jannie Schoeman. Just up the road from the main farmhouse, these beautifully renovated cottages cater for guests looking for some peace and privacy. Fitted with all the luxurious touches, the cottages also provide private “braai” (barbeque) facilities, walking trails in the hills behind and some of the most beautiful views in the valley.

COTTAGE 1

Lovingly restored, original farmstead with 2 bedrooms and spacious bathroom, ideal for families. Jacuzzi bath with separate toilet and shower and double basins. Bedroom 1 has a double bed and bedroom two has two single beds. In the living area there is one double sleeper coach. Fully equipped kitchen with fireplace and TV. Patio with stunning views overlooking the Schoemanshoek Valley. Private braai facilities. Sleeps maximum six. Swimming pool nearby.

COTTAGE 2

COTTAGE 4

Lovely newly built cottage with private patio, braai facilities and stunning views. Wooden floors and antique furniture. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, ideal for families. Sleeps max 5. One bathroom with bath and shower, one with shower and toilet only. Fully equipped kitchen and TV in lounge. Swimming pool nearby.

COTTAGE 5

Newly built cottage with wooden floors and antique interior. Bedroom 1 has a double bed and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and Jacuzzi bath. Bedroom 2 has 2 single beds with en suite shower and toilet. Fully equipped kitchen and TV, as well as private patio and braai facilities. Lovely view. Near swimming pool. Ideal for families. The ideal breakaway from the city – private and close to nature. Newly built cottage with wooden floors and cosy interior. Stunning views from private patio with braai facilities. Ideal for couples. Two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, each with Jacuzzi bath, separate toilet and shower. TV and fully equipped kitchen. Sleeps max 4. Swimming pool nearby.

Farm Tours

In 2006, 8th generation Piet Schoeman was elected the Western Cape’s “Young Farmer of the Year”. From the small vegetable and ostrich farm his father built up in Schoemans-hoek, his farming activities have expanded rapidly over the last ten years and now includes 5000 hectares of irrigation and grazing fields for his flocks of ostriches, herd of Bonsmara cattle, Dorper sheep and Angora goats. Piet and his wife Laura present informative tours on their farm Buffelsdrift, and this non-commercial, private ostrich farm tour is not to be missed. Tours are conducted in English, Afrikaans, German and/or Dutch. Please inquire with management if you would like some more information on this.

Facilities

The lush gardens of Berluda invite you to enjoy the sounds and smells of the Karoo. Hot summer days (November to April) are spent in the cool waters of the sparkling swimming pool.

Dining at Berluda is a taste adventure you will never forget. Try our local Karoo lamb or ostrich delicacies, and some award-winning local wines and sweet wines. You can have your own traditional South African “braai” (barbeque) at the cottages or order a breakfast basket for a picnic in the hills. Schoemanshoek is a beautiful rural valley, with ample safe trails for hiking, mountain biking or horse riding.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Rates are quoted per person per night in ZAR (South African Rand). Rates are at the discretion of BERLUDA FARMHOUSE & COTTAGES and are subject to change. All rates include breakfast, Tourism levy and VAT at the Farmhouse and excludes breakfast at the Cottages. All standard terms and conditions apply.
